★ ★ ★ Backup Scheduler Overview

What is Backup Scheduler? Backup Scheduler for Time Machine is an app that allows you to control when Time Machine backs up your data. It supports macOS 10.11 - Ventura + and offers time-based and idle-based schedules, as well as a combined schedule. The app only schedules backups, and everything else is done by the system. A free Helper is recommended for optimal user experience to enable advanced functionalities such as automatic scheduled backup and Time Machine backup status and statistics.

Software Features and Description

1. IMPORTANT: Time Machine backup in System Preferences should be OFF to prevent the system ALSO doing its default hourly backups.

2. It simply tells the Time Machine app to start a backup based on the app schedule that you set in the preferences.

3. When Backup Scheduler was released in 2013 it worked flawlessly by calling the system time machine functions directly.

4. If Helper script is installed the app automatically shows the backup progress, last successful backup date, time and drive info.

5. App tries to start a backup every 24 hours between 5pm and 10pm if computer is idle for at least 3 minutes.

6. App only tries to start a backup when computer is idle for at least 10 minutes.

7. App tries to start a backup every 24 hours whether or not computer is idle.

8. • Backup Time period schedule: The time range when backups are allowed.

9. All settings are still handled in System Preferences / Time Machine.

10. Note: In Sleep mode computer can only start backups if “Power Nap” is supported otherwise conditions can only be checked when computer is running.

11. This app only instructs the system when to start a backup.

  • Backup when idle for X minutes does not work as expected

    By CruftSkinner (Pcmac user)

The biggest issue I have with Time Machine is high resource usage after awakening from sleep. Typically, multilple processes contend for resources while my Mac performs various houskeeping duties if I’ve stepped away for a while. I had hoped that this app would delay Time Machine activity until I had taken a break. It does not do this. As soon as the desktop appears after typing in my password this app is already banging away on my Time Capsule the app drive. Time Machine activity shows hundreds of megabytes being backed up, which leads me to believe that the not only does the “the app when idle” function NOT work on wakeup, but it can’t be working AFTER I take a break either. Otherwise there wouldn’t be that much stale data that requires refreshing since I last used the system. this app seems to work OK for blocking the default hourly Time Machine schedule, but there are other ways to edit this schedule without purchasing this app.
  • WARNING: Doesn’t actually start backups; wants you to install non-App Store script

    By Duggadugdug (Pcmac user)

Ridiculous. This app doesn’t do anything more than pop up a reminder to manually start a Time Machine the app (pointless and something I can do without giving $5 to the developer), unless you install a script from a 3rd-party site, which is a big red flag: If a developer doesn’t want to incorporate something that essential into the actual App Store product, which is subject to Apple quality control and virus/malware screening, then something fishy is afoot. I’m not about to take that chance and — based on some of the bad reviews by those who did — it sounds like the offsite script may not even work properly. Extremely misleading and suspicious. After purchasing, installing, and trying this bogus product, I am now extremely skeptical of the validity of all of the 5-star reviews posted. Now I just need to figure out how to pursue a refund, and report this scheme to Apple...
  • Does Exactly What it Says it Does.

    By kptchris (Pcmac user)

Follow the instructions, the App will ask you to download an Applescript that adds the service that makes it work properly, you can open that in the Editor that came with your Mac and see if it’s doing anything you don’t want. Beyond that and setup correctly? Fantastic. I’d rather pay $5 than spend a few hours writing my own method from scratch. My only complaint and I’m not docking stars for it, I’d like finer tuning or advanced tuning for when backups occur/stop. I’m running a server, during high load times, it’d be great to be able to set task priority %, or backups during low task %. Nitpicky stuff. Completely worth $5.
  • Backup Scheduler - A Godsend to Me

    By Medawes (Pcmac user)

I’m a solo consultant and venture investor with a large number of simulataneoud projects and so use a CRM to keep me organized. This often competes with my disk drive tfor attention when Time Machine back ups occur and everything boggs way down - a siutuation I can’t afford. this app completely resolved that problem. Now, I haven’t had a need to restore from memory, so,I’m trusting that works, but through the dashboard I have every incication that it will. Its a simple solution that gas made my life easier. One suggestion - their response time to emails is a little slow,so be patient with questions.
