Top Pcmac Reviews

  • Harsh-sounding

    By TheDudeAbided (Pcmac user)

A reviewer below described this as "high pitched and shrill", and I have to agree. Very glassy, metallic sounding synth. If that's what you're looking for, here you go, but I found it harsh to listen to, and when you use the randomize function, it's way too easy to get too much resonance on some already shrill sound and just have piercing sonic crap coming out of your speakers. Presets are mostly weak, and I'm not big on this form of synthesis either when it comes to making my own patches. I managed to create a nice pad on this once, but every time I come back to the app after a long time hoping it will be better, it's always a waste of time again. Other reviewers will claim I don't know what I'm talking about, but I own and happily use synths like iSem, Lorentz, Animoog, Odyssei, Sunrizer, Gadget, Thor, Magellan, N-Log... They all have their good and bad points, but I'd be hard-pressed to say anything good about this one.
  • Very different sound

    By BeaverCleaver420 (Pcmac user)

I've downloaded tons of synths. This one is unlike all others. Nice presets
  • First iPad synth I actually want to play!

    By Steve Bryson (Pcmac user)

Very the app indeed! I played for an hour after the first install. Very musical. All other synths I've tried on the iPad are "interesting" (when they are any good) but somehow I never want to play them. this app is a completely different experience. I can make expressive, moving music with this instrument alone. An ideal lead instrument for live performance. Virsyn did a great job with the interface design, making complex control and modulation paths easy to grasp. The combination of keyboard, finger modulation, x-y pad and tilt work together gracefully to make complex expression easy and natural. This is the closest I've seen to what I think the iPad can be as a musical instrument. Oh - and the sounds are excellent too. The dual additive synth/filter combination is hugely versatile. If I were to wish for more it would be drawable modulation signals (like the drawable partials and filter spectrum), but that's being greedy. This is the first iPad synth that I cared about enough to wish for more features :). It's already fantastic. Incredible for $5.99.
  • Excellent, warm sounds with solid interface

    By HouseOfHomuth (Pcmac user)

I held off on buying any of VirSyn's products for a little while, but ended up with the both iPhone version and iPad version (after it went on sale) of this app. I think it's an excellent synthesizer - one of my favorites. The new update fixed some previous issues with organizing presets. There is also a randomizer button similar to Magellan's "spawn" feature that will make a new preset, which you can then save. The presets I tried were mostly very warm and musical. It may not have the depth of presets "out of the box" compared to something like Sunrizer or Magellan, but the ability to make new ones is fully there. I thought the arpeggiator, in particular, sounded great. While I don't use in-app 4-track recorders often, the app's looper is very convenient to use, so you can do some simple layering of parts before exporting them as one track. Touch screen keyboards are always limiting, but I really liked the key/mode-specific option. Nice synth!
