Software Features and Description

1. The hexagrams are now in line with the way most people use the iChing: the unchanged hexagram, the moving lines and the secondary hexagram, as well as the core hexagram are now shown on a single page.

2. You can trow yourself and use the Trigam based lookup tables and the numbered index to all 64 Hexagram texts with moving lines.

3. This saves a lot of work as the app automatically shows the Primary, Secondary and core hexagram implied by the divination.

4. • Alternatively you can do it all on the iPhone with a statistically sound simulation: the 3 velocity sensors seed the random generators, similar to casting real coins.

5. The most complete implementation of the iChing available on iPhone: a work of love and great patience.

6. • Chinese fortune telling of Yin & Yang with the well-known 3 coin divination method.

7. Several improvements to the casting method and the display of the results were suggested by some users.

8. It is is now possible to see the coins of the 6th cast, so I added the 'Explain' button to jump to the results.

9. And only the relevant moving lines are shown.

10. Checkout "More Applications by Bas Meijer" in the AppStore, some fun ones are free, some serious ones are on a discount now.

  • Good idea, but flawed

    By The_Soundsmith (Pcmac user)

First off, I should say this is a potentially great app for I Ching users/students. The displays are readable and clear, navigation is simple and obvious, and there are some expansions (tetragrams) that are interesting to contemplate. The concept is exactly what I had hoped for, but I have found a few things that require attention. 1: Minor point: the coins do not give me a visual indication if they were head or tail up. Simple fix, brighten up the coins and perhaps make them larger. (As a suggestion for update, consider a way to allow us to work with virtual yarrow stalks as well?) But the big issue: The red area at the top of the screen tells me that, for example: "Hexagram 38 changes to 10. Six on place 5." I assume this is accurate (remember, I can't see the coins clearly...) But the body of the text of "The Image", then reads - always - "No moving lines for the current hexagram. The following commentary does not apply." And then there is no way to get to hexagram 10 without searching in a differemt part of the app. I don't know if there is a mechanism to display the second figure or not, as I cannot get it to admit there is one. This is a process, hex 1 is point A, which through the elements of the moving lines (line 5,) changes (The Book of, remember?) into Hex 2, in my example, Hexagram 10. Hopefully this is merely a programming error, not a design limitation. Please fix this, and make it a 5-star, great app...
  • Overall decent

    By BubbaJonBoy (Pcmac user)

Runs fine - no issues. My biggest beef as a student is that I take issue with the coin toss method the author uses. The results appears to be opposite what I would expect. He has the lines superimposed on the coins so it's not a mistaken head tails identification. Example three lines are old yang. Apparently these are used as old yin - the opposite. If you get two lines and one broken - 2 yang 1 yin the result should be young yang but instead it's like he uses the "odd man out" and uses the yin. Other than that I love the suggestion of a log.
  • App does not display properly

    By DoggyDawg88 (Pcmac user)

Thank you for removing the badge! However with the latest update, the app is not displaying correctly. When I go to the "casting" page, the 3 coins are all the way at the top of the screen, halfway out of the frame. The resulting hexagram page does not center correctly - instead, it centers on the middle of the text, so the beginning cannot be seen.
  • Well done

    By Enoch Soames (Pcmac user)

This is by far the best I Ching app in the App Store. I agree with the other reviewer that a save log would be helpful. While the text is generally well written and clear, it could use a little more proofreading. A request: Please remove the number badge from the app's icon. That's not what the badge is for, and it's ugly.
