If you read the terms of service, and I am a pretty savvy user. Some of the language makes me think that they will bill you the 6.99 even if you cancel more than 24 hours before the auto renewal period. I will fall over the day I see one of these free apps that does not have an auto renewal. Why not let you try it without fear that you’ll forget to do something and next thing you know get billed for months and months until you see your iPhone bill
