After 20 years, and only recently got back into astrophotographing and viewing, this application brings a scale and scope of information that would have taken me weeks or months to research. I went with a NexStar 8SE (had one of the original SCT's) and now getting all of the parts to work together - have made great progress (now need a few good viewing nights), but was impressed how easily SSPro connected to the WiFi and was able to control the scope. I've already got my "bucket list" of objects for future viewing. Would like to see an add-in built around CCD Calculator (or Astronomy Tools), especially the Field of View Calculator Test different telescope, camera & eyepiece combinations functionality. Maybe it's somewhere in SSPro, but haven't found it yet. Bit leary with buying this version and hope that the future upgrade path will not be too expensive, especially if I've invested a lot of time and gotten up the learning curve with this new app (for me).
  • Outstanding Astronomy App

    By rigpasword (Pcmac user)

I’ve loved learning and using this app Safari Pro. I’ve used it to control my Orion 12” Go-To Dob and now my Celestron Nexstar Evolution HD 8” scopes. I’ve used the iOS version to control my scopes from both an iPad and an iPhone but so far, have not used the OSX version of the program on my MacBook. The OSX and iOS versions take a while to learn the differences but it’s mostly intuitive. I love the observing help this app Safari provides in their Session planner and observing list functions. I also added the H-R Diagram option to learn more information about each star I observe. I’ve yet to integrate it with Live this app but plan to work my way into that soon. Unfortunately, I live with many clear skies challenges here in western Washington so my days to use the app are few - not only do we have tall trees everywhere and clouds most of the year, now when we used to have relatively clear skies - we have forest fire smoke!
  • Very Good

    By gdjsky01 (Pcmac user)

As a visual observer that star hops, the cons of this program are its inability to make charts with more than one FOV marker. You’d think it would be a no brainer. Yes it may seem minor, but it means its never the first program I go to to plan a night out. The program is solid. Little to no crashes. It seems to concentrate on computerized scopes. Nothing wrong with that, except of course the one mount I have, the SW Alti does not work. There is little doubt this is the best OS-X Astronomy Program out there. Starry Night is darn good as well. Thing is, neigher seem to do what you would do with a paper chart. Place mulitple FOVs on the chart. Draw on the chart, etc. Adding scopes and FOV are clunky and repetitive. You wind up a dozens of entries instead of just saying place a circle for this scope and EP. Worth it? Yeah it is. However it’s roots as a planetarium program still dominate its functionality.
  • Equipment support update needed

    By virtualimage1 (Pcmac user)

I have used SkySafari since SS4 and it is central to my Macintosh/Apple-based astrophotography system. I use it on both my MacBook Pro and iPad Pro. On the iPad it integrates seamlessly with ZW Optical’s ASIair and my iOptron CEM25EC mount. However, I recently acquired an iOptron CEM40 and found that I was unable to communicate with the mount using the latest OS X version of SS6 Pro. There was no option to specifically select the CEM40 mount as there is on the latest iOS version. I have found though a Simulation Curriculum SS6 forum that this is a glitch in the SS6 software that as yet has not been fixed. I am expecting that at some point this will be fixed and this review will be irrelevant but until that time the OS X version of SS6 does not seen to work with the CEM40 mount. I would ordinarily give this software a 5 star rating but until then I am rating it two stars until the developers take notice and fix the problem.
