More doesn't always equal better
By DrCalvinJones (Pcmac user)
Lots of new bells and whistles, but it feels like they've installed those at the expense of the user friendliness of the previous version.
Probably the biggest digression in the current version of the app is that the user cannot play the radio stream in the app and then leave the app or even go to another part of the app to check a stat or look at the game tracker. If this is the case, why should I even have the WF Gameday App? I could just use TuneIn and the ESPN app, which is much simpler to use. The previous version's setup was optimum in this regard. You could come and go freely from the app without any disruption in the radio stream, as well as browse the stats/gametracker.
Second, maybe it was just tonight, but the quality of the radio stream was not very good. The stream kept skipping and made Stan Cotten sound like he had a pretty severe stutter. I tried listening to the stream on multiple devices, either via 4G LTE or fiber optic internet, and all sounded the exact same. I suppose it is still possible that this problem was only on my end, but I feel like it is highly unlikely given all the variations I tried with the same result.
Finally, the user interface isn't as easy or useful as the previous version. I'm really glad the WFU Athletic Department is working to up their game, giving folks every opportunity to shop, give to the Deacon Club, and get involved, but if they want people to use this app to get involved or enhance their game experience, I feel like they should take another look at how the app works as it pertains to the games. For example, the stats screen works like a website that hasn't been adapted to a mobile phone so when you try to scroll up and down to see a particular part of a subset on the screen, you have a good chance of instead scrolling the entire screen up and down. After the game, once you figure out how to find postgame stats, only part of the stats are shown. You have to go to another place (the gametracker) to see the rest of the stats where you again deal with cumbersome scrolling. Put simply, it's not nearly as easy to use as the previous version.
I definitely appreciate WFU's efforts to deliver a more interactive product to its fans. However this app has too many problems that seem to be products of either oversight or overthinking. Aim between those two. You had an excellent platform with the previous version. You overdid it with this version.
