Pros:

- The app has nearly all the same features as the desktop version, making it familiar to users.

- Compatibility with CSP files created in the desktop version is not an issue.

- The app is responsive and stable, even when working with large images and multiple layers.

Cons:

- The app does not work with the iOS file manager, making backing up files difficult.

- Installing custom brushes from sources other than the "assets" website is a manual process, which can be time-consuming.

- The app is subscription-only, which may drive away potential users who prefer a one-time payment option.

  • I’ve given up on it

    By caelanbaggins (Pcmac user)

It’s very clear that Celsys has no interest in making the app Studio work with the iOS file manager (the “Files” app). It doesn’t let me open from, or save directly to, iCloud Drive or any other cloud service, and I can’t even drag and drop my files in and out of the app. This is absurd and makes backing up a nightmare if I don’t want to use their cloud service, which I have no interest in doing because I like to keep all my work files in one place and I’m already paying for iCloud. It also doesn’t want people to install custom brushes from any source other than their “assets” web site. It’s doable, but again, there’s no drag and drop functionality and I have to manually open each individual brush file and import into the app Studio, which is a nightmare when you have a large collection of brushes. This is just a port of the desktop app with some touch gestures thrown in. It was not really made with the iPad in mind, and it shows. So after a year of fighting with it to make it fit with my workflow, I’ve officially given up and canceled my subscription. I’m sticking with ProCreate.
  • Full-featured App

    By stever2000 (Pcmac user)

This app has nearly all of the same features as the desktop version so if you’re familiar with it then you’ll know what to expect from the app in terms of features (a lot!) I haven’t had any compatibility issues with CSP files that I created in the desktop version. My suspicion is that the iPad’s limited memory will be an issue for some projects but I’ve been able to work with fairly large images (e.g. 3000x3000 px) with around 30 layers with no problems on my 3rd gen iPad Pro with 4GB of memory. The app is very responsive and stable. I haven’t had any crashes and the only feature that seems sluggish is mesh transform. To be fair, this is sluggish on the desktop version as well. I’m not a fan of the subscription model (who is?) but since I _own_ the desktop version I won’t lose access to my creations like other subscription-based software. There are a lot of old reviews that complain about lack of file management. This is no longer a problem in the latest version of the app. The app will work with the Files app via drag-and-drop to import/export all of the different file types that CSP supports.
  • Wish it could be better

    By Opppppy2848 (Pcmac user)

I personally kind of understand the monthly subscription considering how much the actual programs are, but as you can see, not many people here are fans of the subscription and u myself would have to agree on that term. It drives people away and is much more convenient to pay only once, but I don’t want you as a company to start giving out your product almost 1/4 of how it should be really priced. The program itself holds many of the some features as the original but I do hope you can be able to program short cut keys for people who have Bluetooth keyboards. I’m happy that you have an opportunity to import brushes from the website but of course, it’s only under the subscription of the app. My only concern is that some of the windows feel unnecessary and just decrease my window for drawing, as I mainly only need to see my brushes, layers, and the color wheel when drawing. I do hope there is a compromise for a reasonable 1 time pay price because after using this program for quite a while, I’ve grown to love it and hopefully, I can love this in app form too.
  • Love it, but...

    By SketchyNerd (Pcmac user)

I hate that it’s a subscription-only app. I mean, I understand the company needs to make money and they want to compete with PS but I’ve been a the app Studio (and Manga Studio) user for 5 years now. If I originally had to pay for a monthly or annual subscription I most likely would have never tried it. I love everything the program has to offer, but I - and most likely hundreds of others - will give it a 5 star rating after the option to purchase the access to the program and its features permanently is available. I bought Manga Studio 5.0 for $75 (I think) and obviously the program has grown a lot since then, so maybe offer $90 - $100 for Pro and $190 - $200 for EX. Honestly this would be the time to do it since Procreate is getting so much attention recently. Hope this was helpful.
