What is Eponyms?
The app is designed for medical students, medical providers, and nurses to learn about eponymous diseases. Eponyms are diseases, disorders, procedures, or equipment that is named after some person. The app contains disease pictures that may make the user feel uncomfortable, but it is the best way to learn about eponymous diseases. The app explains the history and tradition of eponyms in Western science and medicine.
1. Rarely, an eponymous disease is named after a patient, examples being Lou Gehrig's disease, Hartnup disease, and Mortimer's disease.
2. At a time when medicine lacked tools to investigate underlying causes of many syndromes, the eponym was a convenient way to label a disease.
3. Being awarded an eponym is regarded as an honor: "Eponymity, not anonymity, is the standard." The scientific and medical communities regard it as bad form to attempt to eponymise oneself.
4. If a patient was at doctor’s and s/he said, your tests have come back, it would be unlikely for her to say you have an inflammatory B-cell lymphoma, rather she would say, you have Hodgkin’s disease.
5. Some diseases are named after the person who first described the condition—typically by publishing an article in a respected medical journal.
