What is Eponyms?

The app is designed for medical students, medical providers, and nurses to learn about eponymous diseases. Eponyms are diseases, disorders, procedures, or equipment that is named after some person. The app contains disease pictures that may make the user feel uncomfortable, but it is the best way to learn about eponymous diseases. The app explains the history and tradition of eponyms in Western science and medicine.

Software Features and Description

1. Rarely, an eponymous disease is named after a patient, examples being Lou Gehrig's disease, Hartnup disease, and Mortimer's disease.

2. At a time when medicine lacked tools to investigate underlying causes of many syndromes, the eponym was a convenient way to label a disease.

3. Being awarded an eponym is regarded as an honor: "Eponymity, not anonymity, is the standard." The scientific and medical communities regard it as bad form to attempt to eponymise oneself.

4. If a patient was at doctor’s and s/he said, your tests have come back, it would be unlikely for her to say you have an inflammatory B-cell lymphoma, rather she would say, you have Hodgkin’s disease.

5. Some diseases are named after the person who first described the condition—typically by publishing an article in a respected medical journal.

6. [Caution] This app contains disease pictures that you may feel uncomfortable with, but it is just the best way for you to learn eponymous disease.

7. Eponyms are diseases, disorders, procedures or equipment that is named for some person.

8. If you are a medical student, a medical provider or a nurse for any length of time, you will come across eponyms.

9. When a patient went to the operating room for a pancreaticoduodenenectomy, modified or not, it was not called that, it was called a Whipple’s surgery.

10. There are at least two eponymous disorders which follow neither of these conventions: Fregoli delusion, and Munchausen syndrome.

11. Eponyms are a longstanding tradition in Western science and medicine.

Tons of this app. Basic and Pro versions crash after every viewing of an eponym. Would be a very neat app if this was fixed.
  • Learning Beyond the Eponym

    By Read-10 (Pcmac user)

Using the app I found it not only easy to use, but interesting in that if you want to learn more after reading a brief synopsis over eponym of choice, you have the option in reading more about it through Wikipedia. Like all health-sciences related apps, there is always room for improvement.
