  • Great dictionary - clear and helpful explanation with etymology

    By wluhan (Pcmac user)

I have this Oxford American Dictionary on both my iPad and Macbook Pro. The dictionary came with the Macbook Pro when I got the laptop. The explanations in the iPad version are the same as those on the laptop. They are really straightfoward and easy to understand, much better the Webster dictioanry as the Webster sometimes only gives you a synonym as definition instead of a clear explanation. The etymology (origin) section of this Oxford American Dictionary also helps tremendously, since you get to know how many English words are composed, where they come from. This makes remembering new words much easier. Many dictionaries do not have etymology notes to their words. Although the iPad version costs you some money, it’s money well spent.
  • I love this dictionary

    By Calion (Pcmac user)

The dictionary itself is stellar. There is no better English language dictionary. It is a prescriptive dictionary, which means it tells you what words mean, not how they have been used lately. It's what people expect from a dictionary, but most are not like this. The app itself is pretty good. It could use some interface tweaks like a Back button, but overall it works well, if not flawlessly. The biggest irritation is the continual requests for five-star reviews.
  • Best dictionary app out there

By Mark the Book Lover (Pcmac user)

I have used this app for many years. It is my go to dictionary and comes in particularly handy for reading old classics where I often have to look up uncommon words. I always find the word I am looking for. I particularly like the etymology that tells me the origin of the words. You can even find common foreign phrases in this dictionary whether it be Latin, Greek or French. Overall, it is extremely helpful and very convenient to have it always right next to you on your phone. I wouldn’t do without it.
  • More functions and better userbility

    By Maomaok (Pcmac user)

For the Oxford dictionary: Having an easy access to a dictionary has helped me tremendously to learning the language. At first I thought using one that's solely in English would allow more chances to see new vocabularies so as to learn more. But I find that this particular dictionary is more suited to those who are already fairly familiar to the language: Its definitions are sometimes too wordy and takes you away from your reading while you try to figure out the word. And in some occasions figuring out an unfamiliar word in the definition would leave you in a limbo that only gives you the exact word you're looking up in the first place as its only definition. Functions: I wish there's a separate section to look up phrases like the advanced learners edition to save time. And pictures would certainly help for animals, plants and objects. Usability: Swiping to the right to go back to the previous page rarely works.
