  • Great app with one big problem

    By hmmallen (Pcmac user)

This is a great app, except for the major issue of the dictionary being incomplete. Some words are missing from this dictionary even though they're included in Apple's built-in New Oxford American Dictionary. I shouldn't have to look up words in the official Oxford American Dictionary app only to find that I have to use iOS's "look up" feature to actually get them defined. Appalling, considering the high price of the app. I hope the dictionary will be updated in the future. Otherwise it's a quality app to make up for the lack of a standalone, built-in dictionary app on iOS. The redesign is a big cartoonish--I preferred the old version, but the functionality is the same and it's still worth the money for virtue of the combined dictionary and thesaurus.
  • Surprisingly limited number of words

    By franklinis (Pcmac user)

I paid about $17 for this app— more than I ever have for an app—because I remember liking the print dictionary a lot and have been frustrated by the limitations of free or low-priced app dictionaries. Sadly, the very limited range of words included in this Oxford dictionary has made it all but useless. When I can actually find a word, I like the definition just fine. But it has far fewer entries than the free Webster’s I’ve been forced to return to, despite that dictionary’s terse, bland and broad definitions. I almost never find anything vaguely slang-y here (which I’d hoped the “American” part would cover), nor any mildly technical word I happen to run across. Does Oxford think “American” is synonymous with “rudimentary?” I’d really like my money back.
  • Returning for a refund

    By Gadgetude (Pcmac user)

Defaults to a nag screen wanting you to rate the app, invite your friends, download the “talk and translate” app they offer and oh yeah, I guess you can type a word in the unobtrusive search bar also. I test a short list of words with new dictionaries to make sure they’re reasonably functional. This is missing several words in the list of words. This is the first dictionary ever to miss “callipygian”. Surprisingly small word content compared to WordBook or Merriam Webster’s dictionary so I’ll be going back to those. Awkward menu button in upper left corner takes you to the actual functionality. Upper right corner of every page has a button to take you to the developer other apps in the App Store. You can scroll through words but there’s no index. If you want to browse through words starting with “Z”, you have to scroll through every single word starting with “A” through “Y” first. Between the ghetto, begging interface, to the lack of functionality and content, I am sorely disappointed Oxford lends their name and content to this garbage. I’m returning for a refund.
  • Love the word

    By DaaTechnician (Pcmac user)

A daily verbal supplement that enriches the mind. Recommended Take as often as needed, no less than ‘One a Day’. Side effects may include: greater articulation, thoughtful friendships, and moderate boost in self esteem. You must be of reading age to indulge, self prescribing recommended. Suitablefor all ages, sharing with friends highly encouraged. Not prohibited by known laws.
